La Salete Martins

Transplant Nephrologist

Maria de La Salete Soares Martins da Silva (Porto, Portugal) obtained her M.D. degree at ICBAS (Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar) School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University of Porto, in 1991. She subsequently completed her specialist training at the Department of Nephrology, Hospital de Santo António, CHU Porto. Her assistant activities were conducted mainly at the Renal Transplant Unit and Pancreatic Transplant Unit. Since 2012 she is a Consultant of Nephrology.

In March 2015 she obtained her PhD degree at the University of Porto. PhD title: “Pancreas-kidney transplantation: clinical and metabolic outcomes and autoimmunity after the transplant”

She is the lead investigator of the Unit for Multidisciplinary Research in Biomedicine (UMIB) at the ICBAS School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University of Porto. Main fields of interest: kidney and pancreas transplantation. 

Since August 2021 she is the Head of the Renal transplant Unit, Nephrology Department, Hospital de Santo António, CHU Porto.

Additional Activities

Invited Associated Professor of Medicine on the ICBAS School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University of Porto. 

Participation in international and multicentric clinical studies: more than 12, as co-investigator or principal investigator. 

President of the General Assembly of the Portuguese Society of Transplantation from 2013 to 2022. Previously, 2010-2013, Vice-President of  the Portuguese Society of Transplantation.

Communications/lectures to congresses: more than 200, in national or international congresses, more than 100 as the first author.

First author of, at least, 25 published articles and co-author of more than other 100 publications. Author or co-author of 3 chapters of scientific books.

Awards received: 13 national and international Prizes.
