Joana Ferrer

Transplant Surgeon

Joana Ferrer completed her medical education at the University of Barcelona School of Medicine in 1995. After passing the Medical Intern Residency exam she proceeded to the General Surgery Residency Program at the Hospital Clinic Barcelona. Dr. Ferrer finished her training as a surgical resident in 2003 at the Department of Surgery at the University of Barcelona, obtaining an award (“Liver regeneration in living donor liver transplant”) at the end of her residency from the Hospital Clinic in recognition of her achievement and dedication.

In addition to her academic career she was admitted by a grant to the Official ESOT (European Society for Organ Transplantation) Formation Course in 2003. In December 2005, she presented her Doctoral thesis: “Living donor liver transplant. Overall risk and consequences of right hepatectomy in the donor” and Cum Laude honors were awarded unanimously. From 2003 to 2007, Dr. Ferrer worked in the post of collaborating physician at Liver and Transplant Unit at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, and has been involved in various departmental activities such as a specialist physician in emergency care in the Department of General and Digestive Surgery.

Currently, Dr. Ferrer is working as a specialist in Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic surgery department and Liver and Pancreas Transplant Unit, Hospital Clínic, Barcelona. Dr. Ferrer was the recipient of a “Fundación de Investigación Médica Mutua Madrileña” Award. She also completed an observership at the University of Minnesota, Department of Surgery under the supervision of Dr. David Sutherland, performing clinical research in the area of pancreas transplant. Moreover, at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN USA, she completed all training requirements to work with large animal models. Following this, Dr. Ferrer worked in the Schulze Diabetes Institute at the University of Minnesota from June 2007 – January 2009, under the supervision of Dr. Hering and Dr. Papas. Her work resulted in some peer-reviewed publications.

Dr. Ferrer is also a co-inventor on a patent application. Dr. Ferrer acts as a reviewer for different peer-reviewed journals (British Journal of Surgery, Cirugía Española, Gastroenterología y Hepatología, Liver International, Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International, and Endocrinología y Nutrición), and also an editor for “Cirugía Española” Journal. Dr. Ferrer is also member of the Societat Catalana de Cirurgia, Societat Catalana de Trasplantament, Asociación Española de Cirujanos, and Sociedad Española de Trasplante Hepático.
